The Landscape of Vagueness
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper investigates the grammatical principles governing the inter pretation of vague predicates, focusing on the context dependence of the ‘standard of comparison’ with respect to which gradable predicates are judged to be true. I argue that the range of variability in interpretation of the standard is larger than has generally been assumed, and that there are distinct types of standards but that this variability can be traced to lexical and grammatical properties of different classes of gradable predicates.

Narrative Vagueness in Grass’s The Tin Drum: A Text-Centric Model of Narration to Reveal Dialogized Heteroglossia
The present study sets out to investigate the narrator’s textual position in Grass’s The Tin Drum. Although authorial self-dramatization through affinities with one or more characters in the work is undeniable, this study mainly concentrates on the inner interpenetrations of heteroglot utterances as uttered by an unreliable first-person narrator, Oskar Matzerath, in the light of the Bakhtinian ...

Uncertainty plays a significant role in modeling and optimization of real world systems. Among uncertain approaches, fuzziness describes impreciseness while for ambiguity another definition is required. Vagueness is a probabilistic model of uncertainty being helpful to include ambiguity into modeling different processes especially in industrial systems. In this paper, a vague set based on dista...
متن کاملFacing up to the Sorites Paradox
The ancient sorites paradox is traditionally attributed to Eubulides, a contemporary of Aristotle and a member of the Megarian school, who is also credited with inventing the liar paradox. The sorites paradox figures centrally in most discussions of vagueness in philosophy and in logic. In my view, it has profound implications for metaphysics and semantics, as well as for logic. In this paper I...
متن کاملSupporting Landscape Dependent Evaluation of Enterprise Applications
The complexity of today’s enterprise application landscapes makes the selection of new applications which still fit into the existing landscape a complex and daunting task. In this paper, we present an approach to support this task by a two-phase landscape-dependent evaluation process. In the initial phase single characteristics of the landscape’s different applications and the application to b...
متن کاملUrban-Historical Landscape Analysis on the Basis of Mental Perceptions Case Study: Tajrish Neighborhood
Despite the close affinity between collective memory and urban structures as the relationship between what is hidden and what is visible; rapid changes throughout the city have caused a disconnection between integrated memories and landscape cohesion. As a context for memories, the historical urban landscape proves to be valuable. The present research seeks to identify elements and signs in urb...
